Lining a body of water with puddling clay is a time-tested method for ensuring a watertight finish. It’s a simple process that involves compacting the clay to remove air bubbles. Because it’s the most natural lining available for water bodies, it is more environmentally and wildlife friendly than other materials. Clay is also a cheaper option, however it must stay wet to avoid cracking.

Uses of Puddling Clay

Our customers use puddling clay for a range of projects, including:

  • Ponds
  • Reservoirs
  • Canals
  • Golf Courses
  • Fish Farms
  • Dams

Puddling clay is also a good option for sealing contaminated ground, such as landfill sites. If you’re working on a land restoration project, get in touch to see what we can do for you.

Things to Consider

It’s important to note that not all sites are suitable for puddling clay, because it needs a firm base. This means recently disturbed land, or areas where soil may slide, are inappropriate. You must also make sure the soil is suitable. Ground water affects peaty, gravelly and silty soils, causing them to move, resulting in cracks and leaks in the clay.

With 20 years of industry experience, our aggregate suppliers offer professional advice and provide the best option for your site.

Our fleet of grab vehicles make delivery easy, no matter where you’re located. However, it’s important to consider the time frame of your project. If puddling clay is dry at the time of delivery, you won’t be able to use it straight away. Simply wetting it and leaving it overnight will make it ready for the next day.

Once compacted, it’s necessary to fill ponds etc. immediately, so the clay doesn’t dry out. Forming a puddling clay lining is also more time consuming than laying a manufactured sheet. Make sure to factor this into the timescale of your project.

Puddling Clay Depth

The ideal depth for laying puddling clay depends on the project. For ponds, we recommend a depth of 200-300mm. In areas prone to erosion, or for heavier duty uses, this will need to be deeper. This also determines the amount of puddling clay you will need to successfully line your pool.

For smaller areas, aim for a thickness of 15-25cm. Although 15cm is fine, the clay will be more susceptible to damage by roots, worms and prodding. Large ponds, lakes and canals require a thicker layer.
